The President's College came into being on the 4th of February 1978. The inauguration of this school was the first official act carried out by His Excellency the President J. R. Jayewardene after assuming duties as the first Executive President of Sri Lanka.

The initial location for this school was at Torrington Place. President's College was shifted from Torrington Place to the present premises at Sri Jayewardenepura on 21st June 1983.
